PROCESS ENGINEER LIQUID PHASE EPITAXY (F/M/D)

Permanent employee, Full-time · Berlin

Your mission
We are seeking a skilled and innovative liquid phase epitaxy and crystallization expert to join our dynamic team focused on developing next-generation lithium-sulfur battery technology. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of crystallization processes and liquid phase epitaxy. This role focuses on developing high-quality 3-dimensional monolithic sulfur-based wafers for our lithium-sulfur batteries. As an integral part of the team, you will play a critical role in the research, design, development and implementation of theion’s polycrystalline sulfur wafer technology and, contribute towards the improvement, scalability and commercialization of the same.

YOUR TASK

  • Design and execute experiments to grow 3-dimensional polycrystalline sulfur wafers using advanced liquid phase epitaxy techniques.
  • Optimize the crystallization process to maintain a high degree of control over the porosity, uniformity and thickness of the grown sulfur wafer.
  • Investigate growth mechanisms and establish robust protocols for consistent and scalable wafer production.
  • Design and implement nanomaterial seeding strategies to modulate and control sulfur crystal growth.
  • Evaluate the impact of different nanomaterial seed introductions on the wafer quality, structural integrity, and crystallographic properties.
  • Contribute towards the design and implementation of wafer growing reactor.
  • Collaborate with material scientists to select and tailor nanomaterials for optimal seed-induced growth modulation.
  • Perform comprehensive material characterization using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and spectroscopy methods.
  • Analyze growth kinetics and crystal morphology, drawing correlations between process parameters and seeding material properties.
  • Maintain record of experimental data and prepare detailed technical reports and publications.
  • Work cross-functionally with scientists, engineers, and external partners to advance sulfur wafer growth technologies.
  • Contribute to patent filings and stay up-to-date with the latest research in crystallization and epitaxy.
Your profile
  • PhD in Materials Sciences, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or a related field with a focus on crystal growth and epitaxy.
  • Demonstrated expertise in liquid phase epitaxy, wafer crystallization, and related techniques.
  • Hands-on experience in nanomaterial handling.
  • Proficiency in advanced material characterization methods.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to innovate and think critically.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven track record of scientific publications or patents.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
